In biology, both owls and eagle owls belong to the order Strigiformes, meaning they are related species.
In Korea, they’re commonly distinguished not by genetic lines but by appearance and sound.

  • Eagle Owl (Bu-eong-i): Has visible ear tufts (feather ears) and makes a deep “boo-woong” sound.

  • Owl (Ol-bbaemi): No ear tufts, and makes higher-pitched “screech” or “hoo” sounds.
